[edit] Description
These Black Bears roam the fields and forests of Wizard's Folly and Regent Valley (Pre-Searing). They will attack on sight. The bears in Pre-Searing use a skill called Breaking Charm, and can only be tamed by using the Ranger skill Charm Animal with great difficulty (see Notes below).
The bears found later in the Southern Shiverpeaks can be easily tamed by Rangers.
[edit] Location
- Pre-Searing Ascalon (level 3)
- Southern Shiverpeaks (level 4)
- Lornar's Pass
- Mineral Springs
- Iron Mines of Moladune
- Witman's Folly
- Talus Chute
- Spearhead Peak (You can find 3 Black Bears at the beginning of the road from Copperhammer Mines to The Granite Citadel. A bit south and to the west from the resurrection site. If you clear the imps it will be very easy to charm them.)
- Thunderhead Keep (There are a couple just outside the King's fort.)
[edit] Skills used
Breaking Charm (monster skill) (only in Pre-Searing)
Brutal Mauling (monster skill)
[edit] Items Dropped
- Bear Pelt (quest Item for Little Thom's Big Cloak.) (only in Pre-Searing)
[edit] Notes
- Despite persisting rumors regarding the bear's attack speed, it does in fact attack at the same speed as all other pets. However, due to the Brutal Mauling skill, which takes longer than a regular attack but deals no additional damage, the Bear does in fact have a lower DPS compared to other pets.
- Taming a Black Bear in Pre-Searing is very difficult but not impossible. It takes two people working together to do this. Have the bear engage the other player, and have the one trying to charm the bear, stand so that the bear will be on the edge of his aggro bubble. Both players should wait until the bear uses its Brutal Mauling skill. You can figure out when by counting the bear's attacks - it will use it every fourth attack. As soon as it does, the charmer must use Charm Animal, and the other player must run in the other direction, at full speed. The bear must be made to chase the retreating player to get it far from the one using the skill. If done correctly, the bear will have moved too far away for it to use Breaking Charm in time. It will definitely require several tries to get it right. (Although not required, Bears have been known to be more easily tamed if the character distracting them is a lower level than the tamer.)
- Brutal Mauling is an attack skill, and can thus activate Shouts and Chants that trigger on attack skills.
