Candy Cane Shard is a special item only available during the Wintersday special event.

It is both a collectable drop and a Salvage Item. (Wintersday 2005 & 2006)

Wintersday Gift Givers will trade 1 Wintersday Gift for 5 Candy Cane Shards. These collectors are located in Lion's Arch, Droknar's Forge, Ascalon City, and Kamadan.

All Candy Cane Shards now stack correctly. (Wintersday 2006)

There are two different types of Candy Cane Shards. They look exactly the same and the Candysmiths will treat each type equally but multiple shards of different types will not stack together. The kind that is dropped from monsters is salvageable, while the kind that is obtained by using a Winter Gift is not. (Wintersday 2005)

Random drop from every monster throughout the game, as well as untamed animals and practice targets, during Wintersday.
3 are awarded to each of the members of a winning team in snowball fights.
1 is awarded for bringing a present to children in the cities (except for Scrappy Jhim who awards a Winter Gift instead).
Every Wintersday quest, with the exception of the two given by Old Nickoles, gives 5 or 10 Candy Cane Shards as part of the reward.

Weapons could be traded at one of the Candysmiths, and Shields and Focus, at Candysmith Marley. The official Guild Wars website says that it's best to keep your candy cane shards until the finale to decide the Winner, Dwayna or Grenth.

During the Wintersday (2006) Finale (every 3 hours in Lion's Arch and Kamadan) Candy Cane Shards were used for betting in the game of which god (Grenth or Dwayna) would receive favor.

Wintersday Gift Givers trade 1 Wintersday Gift for 5 shards, they can be found in Lion's Arch, Droknar's Forge, Ascalon City, and Kamadan.
